EE Hawk: A 4G+/VoLTE/VoWiFi smartphone for under £150

EE has added a new smartphone with fast 4G data, Wi-Fi and 4G calling to its portfolio, a phone that EE hopes will satisfy a demand from consumers wanting more affordable devices.

It’s available to buy from tomorrow (1st December 2017) for £149.99 on PAYG, and also available on contract from £14.99 per month.

The new Hawk Android smartphone comes with a Cat 6 4G modem, giving it the ability to take advantage of EE’s extensive 4G+ network for theoretical speeds of 300Mbps down and 150Mbps up. In the real world, EE achieved a download speed of 238Mbps at Wembley Stadium, which isn’t too shabby.

VoLTE and VoWiFi support also gives users the ability to utilise all of EE’s network, as well as getting coverage indoors, in basements or on the London Underground where Wi-Fi is available.

Given the price, the Hawk isn’t intending to compete with high-end phones, coming with a 5-inch 720×1280 pixel display, 13-megapixel rear-facing camera and a 8-megapixel selfie cam.

There is a fingerprint sensor for added security, and NFC with support for Android Pay. Gorilla Glass front and back also makes the phone more resilient to bumps and scrapes.

The phone is powered by a MediaTek 6750 SoC with 2GB of RAM, 16GB of storage (expandable with memory cards), and the phone runs Android 7.1 Nougat. The battery is 2,500mAh.

At launch every Hawk will also come with a free pair of JBL headphones with JBL Signature Sound.
