Lenovo launches world’s first 5G laptop; on sale this spring from US$1499

Lenovo launched the first laptop with integrated 5G at CES. The Windows 10 machine goes on sale this spring, but don’t expect to see it in the UK yet.

The Yoga 5G is a 2-in-1 ultra-portable laptop, powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8cx 5G Compute platform, with 5G speeds up to ten times faster than 4G.

With support for mmWave not yet applicable to the UK, it seems unlikely we’ll see this arrive on our shores anytime soon (unless a revised model is released here supporting ‘Sub6’ frequences), but for international travellers it could still be a valuable business tool given it can manage speeds of up to 4Gbps on 5G.

Update: I’ve been told the laptop will support Sub 6 frequencies for use on other locations.

The laptop comes with a 14-inch Full-HD touchscreen display (400 nits brightness), fingerprint reader, Lenovo pen, 2 USB-C ports, a nano SIM card slot and embedded eSIM.

The Yoga 5G has 8GB of RAM, with options of 256GB or 512GB of internal storage.

The 60WHr battery offers up to 24 hours of video playback.

Qualcomm’s 8cx 5G Compute platform offers twice the performance of previous generation platforms used on earlier connected PCs.

Pricing will begin at US$1499 when the Yoga 5G models go on sale in spring.

We’ll also see the same Qualcomm platform appear in other devices imminently, with my personal hope of one day seeing a 5G enabled Chromebook enter the market.

Mobile World Congress isn’t far away, so it is likely there will be a number of new 5G connected devices announced there.
