Honor 10 GPU Turbo update rolling out this week; brings new camera improvements too

Honor is rolling out its long awaited GPU Turbo update to Honor 10 users today, along with a few other ‘tricks’. Other handsets will get updates later in the year.

Honor 10 OTA Update 8.1.0.143
Honor 10 8.1.0.143 Update with GPU Turbo, AI Stabilisation and 480FPS slow-motion

Bar OS updates and security patches, most updates don’t bring anything substantially new to the table, but Honor and Huawei will be upgrading a wide range of handsets to add what it calls ‘GPU Turbo’.

Handsets using the latest Kirin chipsets will soon be able to benefit from faster frame rates on games (the list of supported titles is currently quite small, but it is likely to grow given the growth of both brands around the world), a general improvement on phone usability (faster menu navigation, transitions etc) and improved battery optimisation that should extend battery life even under the heaviest loads.

In addition, the Honor 10 update rolling out currently (8.1.0.143) also gives the phone the same AI Stabilisation feature that has wowed Huawei P20 Pro owners, with the ability to take night shots, with 5 or 6 second exposure times, without the need for a tripod or even a very steady hand.

In some ways, this is an even bigger deal than the GPU update!

A new 480 frames-per-second slow-motion mode has also been added to the camera too, plus improvements in the Artist mode.

The .143 update also adds the July 2018 security patches from Google.

The Honor 10 comes with a Game Suite app that allows you to configure the GPU enhancements, as well as turning off notifications that could interrupt your play.

One game that benefits from the GPU Turbo update is PUBG and you can see in a video below (courtesy of Tech Spurt) how the update has improved the gaming experience.
