With the first batch of Pebble Time smart watches about to begin shipping to eager Kickstarter backers, choosing the right colour/strap combination proved to be a bit of a nightmare based on static images alone.

Fortunately, if you’re still planning to buy a Pebble Time or Pebble Time Steel when they go on general sale, you can now try out every colour/strap combination from the comfort of your own home, and see each watch from different angles as it comes to life – virtually!

You will need a printer, an Android phone (the author says an iOS app is on its way if Apple approves it), plus a way to stick a bit of paper to your wrist without it falling off, but none of that should be too much hassle, especially compared to booking an appointment to have a fitting at a local (or not quite so local) Apple store or boutique.

The only downside is that you can’t actually feel the watch on your wrist (hint; the real thing isn’t as light as the bit of paper you stuck on), nor will you get to experience someone in a blue T-shirt saying how much it totally suits you, but you can always use your imagination for that.

How to try out your virtual Pebble Time or Pebble Time Steel:

  1. Download and print out a sticker to put on your wrist.
  2. Download the Virtual Smartwatch app (Android only for now).
  3. Run the app and point the camera at the sticker.
