The Huawei Mate 30 Pro has finally gone on sale to customers in the UK, thanks to an exclusive tie-up with Carphone Warehouse.
At an event held in London, I was given a chance to have another play with the device I first saw back in October last year and thought might never come to our shores.
Available in just one configuration, with 256GB storage, 4G connectivity and in Space Silver, the £899 phone can be purchased SIM free, or on contract.
Early adopters who purchase will receive a free pair of Huawei FreeBuds 3 and a Huawei Watch GT 2 (46mm).
The phone comes with a 6.5-inch OLED display with a curved waterfall edge that makes the display appear to wrap almost all the way around the phone.
The camera configuration includes a quad-camera setup (including two super sensing cameras that can almost see in the dark), alongside a Time-of-Flight camera front and back that allows things such as the use of hand gestures to navigate around the phone.
The phone now supports a fantastic new Ultra Slow Motion feature that operates at 7280fps. The video below is a fantastic demonstration of its capabilities – one of the best clips I’ve ever seen.
There’s also a large 4,500mAh battery, with 40W Super Charge and fast wireless (and reverse wireless) charging, which should keep users going for even longer than the already incredible P30 Pro.
The only caveat is the lack of Google Mobile Services, but this has been addressed by the inclusion of Huawei’s own mobile services architecture – which offers access to a wealth of applications and games via its own App Gallery Store. More apps are appearing daily.
Customers get access to an exclusive VIP customer care service to guide them through the changes.
I hope to get one soon to explain how the new services will work, comparing the user experience with a regular handset and possibly busting some myths in the process.
